Youtuber-Doll Collector Interview

 Hey Gang!

I have one last interview did for 2020 and the fist published for 2021 it is

Toni Nicole of Red Carpet Dolls!

Doll collector’s interview with Toni Nicole!

When did you start collecting/working with dolls? What was your first doll purchase toward that?

Answer: I started working with dolls as a adult over 16 years ago. My niece & nephew would spend the summers with me and I would help keep her busy by playing with her. Together, we started crafting doll clothes. Once summer ended, the children went home and I went online and bought used dolls off of eBay. I’ve been hooked ever since. My niece is now 23 years old!

What was your first doll purchase toward that?

Answer: My first doll collector purchase was the lot of used Barbies from eBay. Since I primarily do doll makeovers & restorations, very rarely do I buy dolls new in the box. My motto: “It’s more fun to make it.”

All photos are courtcy of Red Carpet Doll and may be attached to her videos. So if you see something interesting, check her youtube channel!

A few examples

How many dolls do you own?

Answer: Because I sell the dolls that I makeover, I’m always losing and then restocking the number of dolls I own. Currently,I’ve got about 80 dolls.

What is your favorite doll and why?

Answer: Right now, I am obsessed the BMR1959 series from Mattel. They all have such fabulous style and personality. I also love that they are fully articulated.  I just got 2 for Christmas!

What doll or dolls are not your favorites and why?

Answer:Back in the early 2000s, Mattel created an “urban” series called FLAVAS.  It was supposed to be hip-hop inspired but I think it bordered on being cliché stereotypes. I actually have two that I got when I purchased a lot of used dolls form eBay. They have nice articulation though.

What is the biggest challenge in what you are doing with dolls?

Answer:I have a small YouTube channel that features “How To” doll craft videos and dioramas. Sometimes it is very difficult finding ideas and inspiration for the videos. I try to do things that are unique and individual. There are only so many miniature couches a person can make and there are so many amazing channels on YouTube that also feature doll crafts and it’s hard to stand out.

How do you display or store your dolls?
Answer:I make my own doll stands so it’s very easy to display. Storage is really convenient because most of my dolls are used. I keep those in a large suitcase. I only have one doll that I keep in it’s original packaging. It was a gift from a very special person and I keep it for sentimental reasons.

Have you ever been to a doll show?

Answer: I live in Michigan. The Detroit African American Doll Show is every year in November. It’s less than an hour away but unfortunately, for the last 3 years, something would come up that would prevent me from attending. (This year was Covid-19, last year my sister had surgery) They are very active on Instagram though, so I keep in touch with what the group is up to.

When you travel, do you look for dolls?

Answer: Of course! I always keep an eye out for dolls.

What is your latest purchase?

Answer: I ordered several Made-To-Move Barbies from Amazon. I like to do head swaps to create new dolls that are posable, which is great for taking doll photos.

What doll is on your wish list now?

Answer:I’d love to get the new BMR1959 doll with the afro puffs and colorful rainbow fur coat! And Fashion Royalty Dominique Integrity Dolls are always a favorite.

What do you wish you didn’t purchase?

Answer: #NoRegrets LOL

What is your favorite doll related item?

Answer: I love fashion accessories! They make a look complete. Handbags, hats, jewelry… I love it all.

How often do you photo your dolls and what doll is the most photographed
and/or photogenic?

Answer: Doll photos are a major part of the YouTube videos that I produce and I’m also trying to establish an Instagram following as well so I take tons of photos of the dioramas that I create. I’m still figuring out the best use of light and angles but I enjoy it very much.

I love taking pictures of The Industry Lovesick Collection Legacy Janay High Fashion Doll from Integrity. I love her face sculpt and the top knot hairstyle!

Do you talk to other collectors in person or just on the web?

Do you talk to others outside the doll world about what you do with your dolls

Answer: I am a fan of so many YouTube channels and Instagram pages that features dolls. For years it has been a dream of mine to be able to reach out and collaborate with like minded people who I admired. Recently, in the last year or so, it seems like that’s happening more and more & I think that’s wonderful. Very early this year (2020) we learned of the unfortunate passing of Karen Herbert, who was known on YouTube as PALM TREE LIVING. She had a great doll channel. I think that her loss affected a lot of people in the doll community. It’s amazing to see the impact you can leave on people who you’ve never actually met in person.

If you had the chance to speak to Mattel or other toy makers, what
would you say?

Answer: WOW! Honestly, I can say that Mattel is doing a great job when it comes to representation. We’ve seen dolls of different sizes and shades and abilities. We’ve seen dolls in hijabs and dolls in wheelchairs. It’san incredible time for doll lovers.

What doll do you wish would be reissued?

Answer: I thought the Generation Girls series was really cute. I absolutely loved the Nichelle doll with her curly hair!

What two dolls would you combine and how would you want them
combined? (Muff style question)  Muff is known among bloggers for altering dolls!

http://heyitsmuff.blogspot.com/2013/04/put-twist-around-head-on-articulated.html
Answer: I love the Integrity Dolls face sculpt for Dominique & Janay, but the Made-To-Move Barbies have better articulation, so something like that would be my fantasy doll. And this Versace dress is incredible! I’d love to see some fabulous accessories with it as well.

Thanks so much for the questions. This was really fun.I hope I gave you some insight into my little doll world. I’m so looking forward to seeing what happens in the future and our continued correspondence. I appreciate you so much.

Doll Collectors interview--Part Two Update!

Hey Gang!

After the Doll Collector's Meet up last month, I asked the doll collectors there the
same questions I asked a while back about doll collecting!

First up is Shereese Nicole!

Doll collector’s interview

When did you start collecting dolls?
I initially started collecting when I was younger, however, due to everyday life I fell off. I didn’t rediscover doll collecting until 2013.

What was your first purchase as a collector?
My first purchase was the So in Style: Darren and AA Barbie I can be a Dentist.

How many dolls do you own?
Is this a trick question? Lol, last I checked it was over 200, but I
have not counted recently.

What is your favorite doll and why?
The AA Nikki doll because she was one of the first dolls I purchased
and has been a major player in my doll entourage. Her character is
a more confident and eclectic version of myself; some might say she’s
my alter ego.
Here she is (Shereese calls her Jeanette) with my Margo in the black
and white at Cuba Libre!

What doll or dolls are not your favorites and why?
The twist and turn, non-articulate dolls. I understand these are older
dolls that came before the MTM time period but their unrealistic
body structure has always been weird to me. Guess that's my personal
issue if any lol.

What is the biggest challenge about collecting dolls?
Trying not to overspend and buy unnecessary items to spoil these
plastic people any further.  But on a serious note, my biggest challenge
is finding older or rare dolls at a reasonable price.

How do you display or store your dolls?
Due to limited space, I have acquired My Froggy Stuff storage method
by using magazine boxes to store most of my dolls, in addition, I
also use storage totes and closet shelves.

Have you ever been to a doll show?
Yes, I attended the Doll and Bear show in New Jersey about two years.
It was a very fun and fulfilling experience.

When you travel, do you look for dolls?
I always keep my eyes peeled for dolls, especially at flea markets
and yard sales.

What is your latest purchase?
The Wild Hearts Crew: Jacy doll.

What doll is on your wish list now?
Jean Therapy Tobias Alsford Fashion Figure.
I must say, he is hot!

What do you wish you didn’t purchase?
The hunger games Peeta doll. I wasn’t really a fan of the doll but purchased
it only to keep up with the hype. A quick lesson I learned as a doll collector,
never go with the masses but what dolls actually make your heart flutter;
He was definitely not one of them.

What is your favorite doll related item?
My favorite items would be the first diorama I made which was a doll pool.
I love crafting and making anything for my dolls by hand brings me joy.
OOAK items always appeal to me.

How often do you photo your dolls and what
doll is the most photographed and/or
photogenic?
Well, I haven’t taken many photos here lately however, my AA
Nikki seems to get the most publicity and attention. She is the most
photogenic to me because I have a few different versions of her. This
is because her mood and style changes so often and her photos
enhances them.

Do you talk to other collectors in person or just
on the web?
I mostly speak to doll collectors via the web but as of late I have made
a few dolly friends that I have met and spoke to in person. TBH, I feel
face to face gives you a better bond and understanding with fellow
doll collectors.

If you had the chance to speak to Mattel or other
toy makers, what would you say?
A whole heck of a lot but let’s stick to my top concerns. I would
stress to Mattel or any toy maker that we need more dolls that
represent everyday people not just those of “magazine perfection”.
We also need more minority variety, male and female. Having all
dolls come in articulated and non articulated form, even down to
the children and to also interview more average people to help
with creating various clothing and face molds that appeal to
every generation.

What doll do you wish would be reissued?
The AA Texas A&M doll! I would love to have him in my collection
but I refuse to break bank to do so.

What two dolls would you combine and how would
you want them combined? (Muff style question)
Never really thought about this honestly so I cant give an answer.

I want to thank Shereese for her willingness to take part in this interview! It is
always great to know more about collectors and collecting!

OK, Thanks For Looking!

My Last Blogger Interview!-Update!!!

Hey Gang,
Update!!!
Here is the site for Kev and Miya
http://dollapalooza.tumblr.com/

This is the interview that started it all-- The Mass Blogger Interview! I was contacted on thedollpage a bout a doll body and notice that the interested buyer was from Philly! Well that doesn’t happen often. I know only one other person who collects dolls in Philly (yeah D7ana, you). So I suggest that we could save on shipping and that I would love to meet her. She lived in South Philly. (My old stumping grounds) I suggest that we meet at the Gallery Mall in Center City in front of the Toys R Us there! When I got there Miya and Kev were waiting. Since I don’t know that many collectors I had a lot of questions for them. We talked so much and so quickly I couldn’t remember it all. I kinda keep the knowledge of my doll collecting quite but surprisingly they seemed very open about it. They really opened my eyes! I suggest I do an interview on them for my blog and while waiting for their answers, I wonder what others would say to the same questions. There you have it--The Mass Blogger Interview. If you didn’t read the Mass Blogger Interview, here is the link and if you didn’t read my answers, here is the link to that too!

Kev and Miya

The Interview!
How long have you been together?

We've been married since December of 1994, although we've known each other since we were fifteen.

When did each of you start collecting toys and when did you start collecting dolls?

We have been collecting toys pretty much from the start; When we first got married we went to antique shops, thrift shops and flea markets all over Michigan on the weekends. Being overgrown kids and never being able to resist a bargain, we soon found ourselves collecting and selling things ourselves. We couldn't resist...

When did you start collecting dolls together?

We've always collected dolls together- Kev always liked dolls, but adulthood and marriage allowed him to be more unapologetic about it.

What was your first joint purchase?

It was a Tyco “Little Mermaid” doll, because it looked a lot like Miya once you cut the hair...

How many dolls do you own?

We only recently figured out the total, and it's around 450. Wow.

What is your favorite doll and why?

That's a hard question, and probably one of the major reasons that we have 450 of them! It sounds a little clichéd, I guess, but we treat them all like our favourites! It also varies with the days of the week... Kev is sort of partial to his Modern Circle Melody, though, and Miya DEFINITELY can't choose one. But she LOVES all Steffie faces, Japanese dolls (Sekiguchi, Takara, Annz) and Sindy!

What doll or dolls are not your favorites?

Bratz dolls-they are one of the worst things of all time; creepy dead-looking baby and clown dolls, and those porcelain dolls who look like they are cursed and will come to life and kill you in your sleep; we can't fathom why there are so many immobile dolls coming out nowadays when articulation technology has improved SO much in recent years; blonde bimbo Barbies, some of the very unfriendly looking Fashion Royalty girls, and Kenner's “Dusty”. She was scary.

What is the biggest challenge about collecting dolls?

Money, certainly! But really, more than anything, it's SPACE! Space for storage. Space for display. Space to play. You can NEVER have enough. And owning cats just makes it trickier...

How do you display or store your dolls?

Any way we can. Half of our dolls are in Montreal, and half in Philly at the moment. About 70% are still boxed. Shelves are the most important pieces of furniture wherever we live: wall mounted shelves, bookshelves, cabinets with doors, all of them- they tend to take over our living space. But in a GOOD way!

Have you ever been to a doll show?

We used to go to them all the time, especially when we lived in Oregon in the nineties; I think that there are not as many these days, or so it seems, anyway. One of the many changes that the internet has made to the hobby. The eBay is definitely not as much fun, though far more efficient.

You travel to Canada a few times a year.  What do you find there in the way of dolls that you don’t find here?

High prices! And a few dolls that you don't really get to see much of in the States, such as Germany's Steffi Love and the cute nineties version of Hasbro Sindy; nowadays, though, it seems a lot more Americanized and homogeneous.

What is your latest purchase?

A bunch of long overdue Monster High dolls- Sweet 1600 Frankie Stein, the Clawd and Draculaura combo pack, Operetta and Rochelle... we're both suckers for Monster High; the whole concept is clever as all heck, and we find the dolls are adorable. And the whole “It's okay to be different and we can all respect and enrich one another” message at the center of it all resonates more with us than the “shopping is fun” or “life's a beach” messages that are typical. Probably better for the kids, too, but do any kids  even play with dolls anymore? Also, we just got our first NRFB regular issue Momoko doll- “Love a la Mode”! Gorgeous!

What doll is on your wish list?

Doll”? Did you mean for that to not be plural? Kev wants a bunch of pivotal bodies right now for some well-deserving pretty heads; Miya wants Reese and Sooki from the “Dynamite Girls”, an articulated Chandra SIS doll, and many more...Our 'Holy Grail' dolls include Wild Wolf Kumi, Black Francie, Sindy's friend Gayle, and Tokidoki Barbie( as die-hard Tokidoki enthusiasts we could kick ourselves for not knowing to pre-order).

What do you wish you didn’t purchase?

We try not to buy stuff we won't like- we do a lot of homework and soul searching before parting with our money! It's one of the blessings of being the cheapskates that we are! We must add, however, that we are glad we began concentrating on NON-NRFB dolls. Loose dolls are not only less expensive but you we don't have to feel guilty for de-boxing beautiful pristinely packaged dolls and getting our grubby paws all over them. We have a terrible time deboxing our dolls, though we are coming round to it slowly...they deserve to be released from their prisons and appreciated!

What is your favorite doll related item?

At the moment it is probably all the super nifty 1/6 scale things that Re-Ment has to offer... so many cool things- and they really add to the realism, too...

How often do you photo your dolls and what doll is the most photographed or photogenic?

We only recently began photographing our dolls. First, because we finally had a decent camera, and enough time and equipment to make dioramas. But as we have gotten more proficient with the camera, the more we realized we could do with it, and we discovered that people actually like looking at doll pics online- AND saw all of the cool dioramas that people were putting together all over the web and decided “That's cool. We have to do something like that!” The articulated dolls definitely take the best pictures. Kev realized this last summer when he really started getting serious about taking pics of them and he realized what nice pictures he was getting of our Melody doll. Momokos photograph really well, and Monster High dolls actually yield some beautiful pictures as well, as do Kurhns! Sadly, some of the prettiest and most favourite dolls we have take the most disappointing pictures because they have too limited articulation (gift-giving, karate-chop, or what, me worry? arms) to look natural and/or we haven't got enough knowledge or gear to light them properly. Very pale dolls and ebony dolls alike tend to lose their beautiful features unless the lighting is plotted carefully.

Kevin and Mya, I love this shot! What a hoot!

Ms. Leo: Hey, I know this top! :)

Simply Lovely!

Do talk to other collectors?

You're really the first one we have in a while, other than sales-related small talk! We'd like to know more collectors, but dolls don't seem to often come up in conversation!

If you had the chance to speak to Mattel or other toy makers, what would you say?

There are so many things we'd like them to hear- they seem to REALLY be skimping on the 'play line' dolls- in quality and variety in particular- can't we have poseable AND attractive dolls, and realistic practical outfits that aren't so cheaply made and glittery? The Fashion Avenue stuff was great! And we MISS that sort of quality! What about variations in skin tones, too, especially for dolls issued with pivotal bodies? Unless you want a 'slight tan' you're pretty much out of luck. We tend to like very pale or very dark dolls. Variety is the spice of life! And why the hell are you selling a 'doll' that doesn't move (Model Muse and StarDolls)? Who decided THAT was a good idea? Stop packaging the dolls so excessively. It's bad for the environment, must add to the cost, and removing the doll often damages its hair or clothing. On the plus side, thank you Mattel for Monster High dolls and SIS dolls. However, even then, MH dolls are constantly having false shortages, which raises hype but also prices as scalpers snatch them all up and sell them on ebay for inflated prices. This is discouraging and we don't see how Mattel actually benefit from this. As for SIS dolls, please make more of them articulated, and bring back the Chandra ebony skin tone. It seems as if they want all the girls to pass the paper bag test, and need to be reminded that beauty comes in ALL colours. Make them more available in more stores. We miss the textured hair that 90s dolls used to have as well. Also, could we have another AA male doll face mould? Steven is sort of dorky, bless him. Basic 17 is a great improvement, but can they not make more male dolls that move as well?

What doll do you wish would be reissued?

Agent HAVOC. We both agree that if they had still made Havoc when we were kids, she pretty much would have been our favourite toy of all time! A cute girl secret agent doll with GI Joe style adventure accessories? Heck yeah! She was the right scale to be partnered with the Shindana Wanda career dolls and the“Slade” doll, too, which would've made the coolest  secret agent team ever- they even both came with disco-riffic silver radiation suits! And Mary Quant Daisy dolls, too, from whom Havoc was created, as well. Hispanic Barbie from 1979/80. Crystal Barbie. And Christie's early 70s bf Brad! We recently discovered Tonner's Tiny Kitty Collier, Dottie, and Simone Rouge dolls, too- they are very pretty and nifty (and at ten inches at 1/6 scale make them Miya-sized), but evidently not popular enough, so they don't make them anymore. But her lack of popularity makes her pretty easy and inexpensive to find, though, so I guess its a mixed blessing.

If there is just something you would like to say, I can put that in too.

We have surely already said far more than anyone would ever want to hear from us, for certain...

Thanks for Your interview Kev and Miya! This was such a great interview and you are such a great couple!

Well I hope you enjoyed all the Blogger Interviews!  I know I did.  It was one of the highest viewed post I have done!  I came away with really good tips, and a new outlook on dolls and collecting.

Thanks For Looking!

My Interview Answers!

When I did the Mass Blogger Interview Post I was laboring under two misconceptions. First, I’m a little busy lately, so I thought this would be easy! I wouldn't have to do much but put the questions up! I’d get a few quick answers and it would buy me some time to work on my next blog entry. Second that those question would and should be answered on my own blog and not yours!

Boy was I wrong! When I saw the first answer, I knew that for many of you, it would be better answered on your own blog. You bloggers gave some really interesting answers. I especially enjoyed the pictures and the links you provide. I think I've learned a lot about many of you and tons about collecting! Oh, and if you haven’t answered, It is not too late! Some of you answers were so good that you should provide a link to your answers to your profile.
So here are my answerers! See Marta, I didn’t forget!

When did you start collecting dolls?

I think most of us had Barbie dolls as a child but I started collecting as an adult. When I think about collecting I don’t just think of very rare dolls you keep in the box but the dolls pursuit of dolls. Like my profile states, I was doing a temp job at a local toy store over the holidays. (I did a lot of temp jobs along with my full-time job to pay off my house as single women. I meet my husband two week before my house was paid off!) My job there was to stock the Barbie and doll isles. How much fun was that! I saw all the beautiful dolls that they had and said I would get myself one when the house was paid off. Fast forward a few years and I had got a black Barbie or two from the local Toys-R-Us and had them sitting on a shelf in my bedroom. I still didn’t see myself as a collector. There were two events that change me into a collector. The first was attending the Black Doll show here in Philadelphia and the second was find a doll in a local hardware/variety store that I had never seen before.

What was your first purchase as a collector?

The three Shani dolls and I doll called Elle.  I had seen the Shani dolls in the store when I was working but they weren’t there when I was ready to buy.

Elle was the first doll I had seen that was that dark.  They sold her to me for a discount because she was so dark that no one liked her! Well I had to have her then.  I had her several years before Princess of South African came out and a few years before Mbilli.  I have her on a  Princess of South African body.  Her old body was of poor quality.  She has purple eyes!

How many dolls do you own?

About three hundred dolls give or take a few. Most of my dolls are Mattel dolls: Barbie and friends and Disney. I have one original body Rees doll, and two Integrity Toy Mattel hybrids (three in total) , I have other popular fashion dolls, some off brand dolls and many action figures. I have found out that in doll world as in the real world….you can never have enough men!
What is your favorite doll and why?

I have dolls that come and go in favor. They might change depending on my mood. I even have background dolls but I have two favorites dolls: Ms. KiKi (Kenyan Barbie hybrid) and

Ms. D (Julia Repo hybrid).

Ms. D is the sentimental favorite because she is Julia and Ms. Kiki is just a favorite and she is my favorite of the Shani head sculpt.

What doll or dolls are not your favorites and why?

I only like 1/6 dolls and of them only certain ones. So, all cloth and porcelain are out. What I don’t like also is all big head dolls like My Scene, Liv, Moxie, Bratz and…I’m sorry, Monster High! I just don’t think they look 1/6. I also don’t like dolls with those creepy glassy looking eye or large eyes like Liv and others!
What is the biggest challenge about collecting dolls?

First is money, second is space and third is that I like to be able to see dolls in person to know if I want them. Many dolls are not sold in stores. Fourth is keeping it organized.  I find myself look all over for a
doll sometimes or and item of clothing to take a picture.

How do you display or store your dolls?

I do have some little setups around but I don’t have a cabinet or anything like that for them. Maybe one day. Right now I store them in cardboard boxes to breath.

Sydney on the bedroom table.  Sydney will be appearing at the Student Union.

Ghana Barbie relaxes in the upstairs hall.

Have you ever been to a doll show?

Yes, but there is only one in the area—the Phila. International Black Doll Show and Sale. I need to find more.
When you travel, do you look for dolls?

If I am traveling by myself, yes. I always want to look for dolls. When I am away with my hubby, he doesn’t what to do that type of things on vacation.
What is your latest purchase?

This Girl

I’m calling her Shania

What doll is on your wish list now?

I want some AA FR men!

I have two tall gals with no tall guys around here. And well, I purchase an AA Magic Wings Mariposa doll (small Mackie face) from a local flea market the other day and she fell out of the bag somewhere along the way to my car and now I have to find her or at least her head.

What do you wish you didn’t purchase?

The Dancing Liv Alexis!

I didn’t know her body did articulate until I got her out of the store. I take most dolls out of the box at the store so I don’t take the trash home. It is also easier to sneak into the house that way. I haven’t been able to sell her or any of the Liv heads and wigs I have. I think the market is flooded! Anyone interested in some Liv heads?

What is your favorite doll related item?

I have a lot of stuff but I guess my go to pieces are my park benches

and backdrops! They show up a lot in my pictures. Nothing else is used as much right now.

How often do you photo your dolls and what doll is the most photographed

and/or photogenic?

Not as often as I should. Right now, I do it mostly for my blog. I hope to do more fun photo shoots. The most photographed is Ms. D (Julia Repo hybrid) and the most photogenic is Ms. KiKi (Kenyan Barbie hybrid). I just love her big brown eyes!

This was my favorite photo shoot! The Dance of Rouba!  KiKi's Office and dress from the The International Black Doll Show In Philly!

Dominique is complaining that of all the great shots of her I would choose that one!

Ms. D: OK, that's better!

Do you talk to other collectors in person or just on the web?

I don’t know too many collects other than the ones I have met on the web. So I mostly talk to them on the web.

If you had the chance to speak to Mattel or other toy makers, what

would you say?

To all---

There has to be quality in your item! There reason why some dolls end up in secondary markets and the thrift store is because they are sturdy and well made.

Natural looking makeup is important too. They are dolls not clowns!

The next step in doll evolution is articulation. Don’t be a Dodo!

Your lines need more diversity of dolls in female and male dolls. Black men and women come in more than one complexion and most have dark eyes. Not every redhead has blue or green eyes and even blondes have brown eyes.

Develop you lines. Example: We see the Barbie sister but what about clothing packs and other stuff? It might be too much for the store but how about on line?

Action Figure Companies—it is not just little boys buying your figures! Keep your figures 1/6! You will sell more that way. Large hand and feet aren’t necessary for them to appeal to boys. The more your figures can fit into other manufactory’s items, the better they will sell

More realistic looking clothing for girls and guys!

What doll do you wish would be reissued?

Mattel Diana Ross,

Janet Jackson and

Tutti's friend Carla!

What two dolls would you combine and how would you want them

combined? (Muff style question)

#17 with an articulated body and more AA males on an articulated body!

Well, I hope you found my answers as interesting as I found your!

Thanks For Looking!

XOXO
Ms. Leo
